Japan to restart 2 nuclear reactors

(VOVWORLD) - Fukui prefecture governor Issei Nishikawa on Monday approved the restart of 2 nuclear reactors near Kyoto, clearing the final regulatory hurdle for the revival of the nuclear power plants early next year.

Japanese officials said the decision comes in spite of long-running opposition to atomic activity in Japan.

The Ohi plant is on Japan’s coast, about 60 km north of Kyoto. Reactors 3 and 4 stopped working in 2011 and briefly restarted in 2012, but have not been used in recent years. Japan shut down all of its atomic reactors in 2011 after a powerful earthquake triggered a tsunami that led to meltdowns at the Fukushima nuclear plant.
