Organizers of the Award are the Voice of Vietnam, the United Nations Development Program, the World Wide Fund For Nature, and the Project Management Board on reducing ocean plastic waste in Vietnam.

After nearly two months of contest launching, the Organizing Committee received hundreds of entries from 64 press agencies and individuals across the country and selected 206 works for the preliminary round. Through the preliminary and final rounds, the jury unanimously selected 13 most deserving stories for awarding.

Voice of Vietnam President Do Tien Sy told the award ceremony: “The award is a recognition of the achievements of journalists and editors in the cause of environmental protection in general and the reduction of ocean plastic pollution in particular. The award is also an incubator for policy solutions and innovative models of environmental protection that contribute to the country's sustainable development. It is a well-deserved honor for journalists after months of hard work during the pandemic.”

Electronic newspapers VTC News and VOV News won 3rd prize with "Haunting propaganda paintings about ocean plastic waste" by Nguyen Duy Thanh, and "The unbelievable journey: 10 days of plastic waste-free tourism of a Hanoi family" by Hai Nam.
