The opening of the port will enable direct exports from northern Vietnam to US and European markets, and eliminate transit through ports in Singapore or Hong Kong.

The international container port will be able to handle vessels up to 100,000 dead weight tonnage.

The seaport infrastructure for transporting commodities will contribute to the economic development of Vietnam.

Nguyen Van Cong, Deputy Minister of Transport, said: “These important connections will boost economic growth for the whole region. The transport sector should find ways to reduce logistic costs by cutting transportation costs, focus investment on key routes, and ensuring that investment in the transport system is used effectively.”
