Promoting gender equality is an important part of Vietnam’s socio-economic development strategy. The 2007 Law on Gender Equality set out the targets of eliminating discrimination and ensuring women equal rights in socio-economic and human resource development. Vietnam has a strong record of promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment in line with its implementation of the Millennium Development Goals. This year, Vietnam ranks 69th of 144 governments in the World Economic Forum Global Gender Gap report.
NA deputies recommended that the government review and revise national targets for gender equality in the 2015-2020 period, boost gender equality resources, and resolve issues related to labor, employment, violence against woman, and maternity care. Ngan Phuong Loan, a deputy for Lang Son province, said: "I applaud the National Assembly’s decision to put the prevention of domestic violence and child abuse in the draft resolution on next year’s national socio-economic development plan. We should focus more on communications and education to gradually eliminate discrimination against women."
Minister of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs Dao Ngoc Dung proposed measures to achieve gender equality. He said: "The government intends to create more jobs, particularly for those in rural areas taking part in new rural development and sustainable poverty reduction programs. Resource plan should enhance the participation of women in politics. We also need to develop a policy to support vulnerable groups including the elderly and disadvantaged single women."
On Thursday afternoon, deputies discussed the revised Law on Anti-corruption.
