Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, Acting President Dang Thi Ngoc Thinh, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, and NA Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan were among the attendees. The National Assembly Standing Committee nominated Party leader Trong as the State President in replacement of Mr. Tran Dai Quang, who passed away last month due to a serious illness.

NA Chairwoman Ngan said the NA will review the five-year plan for socio-economic development until 2020, economic restructuring, national finance and mid-term public investment, and policies supporting socio-economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas. Economic and State budget performance in 2018 and plans for 2019 will also come under scrutiny.

“The legislature is scheduled to adopt 9 bills and 1 draft resolution and give opinions on 6 other bills. The bills deal with the socialist-oriented market economy, human rights, public health care, anti-corruption efforts, judicial reform, national security, defense, education, and training,” Madam Ngan said.

Law makers will conduct votes of confidence on officials elected or approved by the NA and consider the rafitication of a trans-Pacific trade deal.

“The NA will elect the new State President, and approve a new Minister of Information and Communication. Ratification of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement on Trans-Pacific Partnership will create a solid foundation for continuing to integrate into the world and provide new momentum for national development,” Chairwoman Ngan noted.

Three days will be dedicated to a question-and-answer session on the Government’s performance since the beginning of its tenure. 15 sittings will be live broadcast during the session, which will run until November 21.
