National Congress of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha to open next week

(VOVWORLD) -1,100 venerable monks, nuns, and followers in Vietnam and abroad will attend the 9th National Congress of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha for the 2022-2027 term in Hanoi next Monday.

The Organizing Committee told a press conference on Wednesday that the Congress themed “Discipline-Responsibility-Solidarity-Development", will review and evaluate accomplishments of the previous tenure (2017-2022), and set out directions and tasks for the next 5-year tenure.

Most Venerable Thich Hue Thong, Deputy Secretary General and Chief of Office II of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, said: “The 9th Congress of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha will elect the Executive Committee and the President. The Congress will also give awards of the Buddhist Sangha and the State to collective and individuals. An important part is to amend the Charter of the Vietnamese Buddhist Sangha and a number of other Buddhist affairs.”

The 8th Vietnam Buddhist Sangha successfully organized the 3rd United Nations Day of Vesak in 2019 and the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha in 2021. It has engaged in poverty reduction with a donation value of about 2.8 million USD. International Buddhist relations have been maintained through international Buddhist conferences and humanitarian programs such as supporting the governments and people of Laos, Cambodia, India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Vietnam Buddhist Sangha established a Coordinating Committee in Laos, bringing the total number of its overseas offices to 22 in Asia, Europe, America, and Europe.
