Parties call for greater stability, cooperation in East Sea

(VOVworld) – Scholars and policy advisers gathered at the annual international East Sea workshop in Da Nang on Monday to discuss cooperation for regional security and development.

Disputes should be solved through peaceful means in accordance with international law

Dang Dinh Quy, Director of the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam, said the more complicated the East Sea issue becomes, the more the international community will pay attention.
Participants shared the view that all parties concerned should resolve disputes through peaceful means in accordance with international law, especially the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea,  and respect for the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) toward adopting a Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC). Countries involved are required by law not to take any action that worsens the situation.

The 25th ASEAN Summit in Myanmar

U Myint Thu, Deputy Director General of the ASEAN Affairs Department of Myanmar’s Foreign Ministry, said Myanmar has attached the greatest importance to the East Sea issue during its 2014 ASEAN chairmanship. ASEAN leaders have issued many statements asserting the importance of peace, stability, and maritime security in the region and the importance of abiding by the DOC and ASEAN's Six-Point Principles on the East Sea. The 25th ASEAN Summit reiterated this aspiration of ASEAN countries and agreed to push forward measures to increase stability in the East Sea.
