(VOVworld) - Republican Paul Ryan of Wisconsin was elected Speaker of the US House of Representatives on Thursday, replacing John Boehner who earlier announced his resignation by the end of this month.

236 of the total 247 Republicans in the House of Representatives voted in favor of Ryan. The other 11 voted for Daniel Webster.

Ryan is chairman of the House Budget Committee and the Ways and Means Committee. He was Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's running mate in the 2012 election.
