Pilot who handled plane crash well awarded Certificate of Merit

(VOVWORLD) -Major Do Tien Duc, who managed to divert a military aircraft away from residential areas before safely parachuting out on January 9 in Quang Nam province, was awarded a Certificate of Merit and a Letter of Commendation by the Minister of National Defense.

Major Do Tien Duc, Chief of Squadron 1, Regiment 929, Division 372, Air Defense-Air Force was honored on Saturday for his calm and clever actions in handling unexpected situations in the air, minimizing loss of life and property of the people.

Earlier, the Minister of National Defense decided to promote Duc from the military rank of Captain to Major.

At noon on January 9, Duc was piloting Su-22M4 aircraft number 5880, which encountered a malfunction and was unable to land. After receiving the flight commander’s order, he managed to steer the plane out of a populated area and ejected at a location approximately 19 km south of the runway in Dien Ban town in Quang Nam province.
