President begins Egypt visit

(VOVWORLD) - President Tran Dai Quang on Saturday wrapped up a 3-day state visit to Ethiopia and began a 4-day state visit to Egypt. This is the first visit by a Vietnamese head of state to Egypt since the two countries established diplomatic ties in 1963.

President Quang told Egyptian media that bilateral cooperation has grown but there still much room for improvement. He noted that Vietnam is ready to help Egypt access the ASEAN market while Egypt can serve as a gateway for Vietnamese products to penetrate Middle East and African markets. President Quang is scheduled to hold talks with President Abdel Fattah Sisi and meet Egypt’s Prime Minister and Parliamentary Speaker.

During his visit to Ethiopia, President Quang and President Mulatu Teshome pledged to create the best conditions for cooperation between the two countries’ businesses and agreed to soon open a direct air link to boost tourism, trade and people-to-people exchanges. They underlined to need to solidify political trust by maintaining regular visits at all levels and expanding cooperation in trade, investment, agriculture and education. Ethiopia recognized Vietnam as the sole candidate in Asia-Pacific for a non-permanent seat at the UN Security Council in the 2020-2021 tenure.  

The leaders witnessed the signing of an agreement on visa exemption for diplomatic and official passport holders and an MoU on investment promotion.

President Quang also met Acting President of the African Union (AU) Amira Elfadil Mohammed Elfadil.
