President Tran Dai Quang: Vietnam treasures ties with Japan

(VOVWORLD) -Japanese Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko hosted a welcome ceremony for President Tran Dai Quang and his wife, who are on a State visit to Japan, at the Tokyo Imperial Palace on Wednesday.

During talks afterwards, President Quang said the State and people of Vietnam treasure the relationship with Japan. He expressed his hope that the visit will open a new period of Vietnam-Japan ties, benefiting the two peoples and for peace, stability, cooperation, and development in the region and the wider world.

The Emperor and Empress recalled their deep impression on Vietnam during a visit in 2017 and reiterated their support for and contributions to developing bilateral ties. The Emperor said the strengthening of mutual trust and understanding through cultural and people-to-people exchanges are important as both countries celebrate the 45th anniversary of Vietnam-Japan diplomatic ties.

Later the same day, during a meeting with Upper House President Chuichi Date, President Quang suggested that both countries increase cooperation in legislative work and closely coordinate with each other on international issues. He called on the Japanese parliament to strongly support ASEAN’s stance on East Sea issues and help Vietnam enhance capacity of maritime law enforcement forces.

Also on Wednesday, the Vietnamese President talked with heads of major groups who are members of the Japan Business Federation Keidanren, the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and other economic organizations. Mr. Quang said Vietnam aims at an average economic growth of between 6.5% and 7% per year until 2020, macro-economic stability, sustainable development combined with environmental protection, an attractive investment destination, and greater participation in global value chains. He added Vietnam respects the valuable consultation and close cooperation from Keidanren through the Vietnam-Japan Joint Imitative Dialogue. President Quang described the dialogue as important for Vietnam’s fine-tuning of laws and policies, improvement of investment climate, and attraction of foreign capital, including those from Japan.
