This is the first trip to the country by a key Vietnamese leader after the 13th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam and also the first by a Vietnamese President over the past nine years as the two countries  are preparing for the 10th founding anniversary of strategic partnership.

Vietnam and Indonesia established diplomatic relations in 1955 and set up the strategic partnership in 2013.

President Phuc’s State visit to Indonesia takes place amid the growing bilateral ties. In Southeast Asia, Indonesia was the first country to establish diplomatic ties with Vietnam in 1955 and Vietnam has been Indonesia’s strategic partner since 2013.

Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, the two countries held several exchanges at various levels.
The two have signed several bilateral cooperative agreements including the Action Program to implement Strategic Partnership in the 2019-2023 period.

Both Vietnam and Indonesia play important role in ASEAN and have improved their position in the UN. Next year, Indonesia will be ASEAN chair.

Based on the foundation of strengthened bilateral cooperation, President Nguyen Xuan Phuc’s visit is of great importance to strengthening political trust, deepening multi-faceted cooperation, and bringing bilateral ties to a new period of development.
