Prime Minister Dung: ACMECS cooperation promotes sustainable development in the sub region

(VOVworld) – Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung joined his counterparts from Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and the ASEAN Secretary-General to attend the sixth Ayeyawady-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy Summit (ACMECS) on Tuesday in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar. Addressing the opening session, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said that the common goal is to expand cooperation among countries, focusing on areas with the potential to boost the competitiveness of countries in the region. Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said: “Vietnam’s Government has strictly implemented measures to improve its business investment environment, to increase its competitiveness through a the breakthrough strategy, to reform its economy and to enhance its growth model. Vietnam attaches great importance to ACMECS cooperation and is eager to coordinate with other countries in the sub region to effectively ensure the prosperity of each country and the peace, security and prosperity of the whole region.”

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and the regional leaders reiterated their determination to consolidate their traditional friendship and boost their cooperation for the benefit of the people of Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand and Myanmar. Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung urged ACMECS to focus on agricultural cooperation, creating good conditions for transportation and border trade, especially along key economic corridors of the sub region, management and sustainable use of water resources, and coping with natural disasters and climate change.

The sixth Ayeyawady-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy Summit (ACMECS) will adopt an action plan for the 2016-2018 period to increase the competitiveness of economies in the sub region, making ACMECS the top destination for investment and tourism in the region. Eight priority areas of cooperation include: creating good conditions for trade and investment, agriculture, industrial cooperation, energy cooperation, linking transportation, tourism, developing human resources and environmental cooperation.  The summit adopted a joint statement and agreed to hold the seventh Ayeyawady-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy Summit (ACMECS) in Vietnam.
