(VOVWORLD) - Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc joined leaders of Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and President of the Republic of Korea (RoK) Moon Jea-in at the first Mekong-Republic of Korea (RoK) Summit in Busan on Wednesday.

Discussing future cooperation, leaders agreed to upgrade their partnership to the summit level based on three pillars: People, Prosperity, and Peace, and 7 high priority areas: culture and tourism, human resources, agriculture and rural development, infrastructure, information technology and telecommunication, environment, and non-traditional challenges. They announced the establishment of the RoK-Mekong Biodiversity Center, the Joint Research Center for Promoting RoK-Mekong Water Resources Cooperation, and the RoK-Mekong Business Council.
Prime Minister Phuc emphasized the 3 main targets of the Mekong-Rok cooperation: strengthening regional peace, innovative people-centered economic development, and economic growth combined with environmental protection and natural resource preservation.
Leaders agreed to organized a 2nd Mekong-RoK Summit in Vietnam next year, and 2021 will be the Mekong-RoK Year, marking the 10th anniversary of the Mekong-RoK Comprehensive Partnership.
