Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh meets President Joe Biden

(VOVWORLD) - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met with US President Joe Biden at the White House on Thursday (US time) within the framework of the ASEAN-US Special Summit in Washington DC. The two leaders discussed relations between Vietnam and the US and regional and global issues.

Prime Minister Chinh called the Vietnam-US relationship a special relationship, saying the two countries have overcome the painful past of war, worked together, and developed their Comprehensive Partnership more substantively and effectively in all fields. Vietnam hopes that the US will continue to support, help and cooperate with Vietnam in areas where the US has strengths and Vietnam has potentials and needs such as disease prevention, digital transformation, supply chain diversification, climate change combat, and human resource training, Mr. Chinh said, calling for strengthened cooperation with and support for Vietnam in developing green economy and circular economy, diversifying supply chain, and shifting sustainable energy.

President Biden said he personally always has lots of feelings for the country and the people of Vietnam and that the US, as a leading developed country, is eager to cooperate with and assist developing and less developed countries in many areas, including economic and trade development, disease prevention and climate change response.

Discussing regional and global issues of mutual concern, President Biden agreed with Prime Minister Chinh on respecting independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political institutions among countries, non-use of force, peaceful settlement of disputes and conflicts on the basis of international law and the UN Charter, and freedom of navigation and overflight in accordance with the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea  (UNCLOS).

Earlier, at the White House, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and leaders of ASEAN countries joined a banquet hosted by President Joe Biden. The ASEAN-US Special Summit will take place on Friday (US time) with working sessions between President Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and leaders of ASEAN countries.
