Protesters block Bangkok streets – Government calls for peaceful demonstrations

(VOVworld) – Protesters overflowed into Bangkok streets on Monday - the first day of a “Shutdown Bangkok” campaign led by Suthep Thaugsuban. They put up barricades and tents at crossroads and shopping malls to impede trading activities.

Thai army spokesperson Winthai Suwari said the army only deployed soldiers at government offices to maintain security and public order.Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra asked her Deputy Prime Minister Phongthep Thepkanjana to hold a meeting of all concerned parties on a proposal by the Election Commission (EC) to postpone the February 2 election until May 4. Phongthep will meet with representatives from the EC, political parties, and proponents and opponents of the election on January 15.
