Ruling SNS party wins Serbia parliamentary election

(VOVworld) - The ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) has won in the early parliamentary election on Sunday with 49% of the votes. Preliminary statistics released by the electoral commission reported that SNS’ ally, the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) finished second with 14.7%, followed by the Democratic Party of Serbia (DS) with 5.9% and the New Democratic Party of Serbia (NDS) with 5.7% of the votes. Official results will be announced on Thursday. SNS leader Aleksandar Vucic is now poised to become Serbia’s next prime minister.

The victory will give the SNS 160 seats in the 250-seat parliament and the power to form a new government for a 4-year term. New cabinet members will take office in the middle of July.
