Russia opposes the deployment of peacekeeping force in Ukraine
(VOVworld)-Russia’s Ambassador to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin has accused Kiev of seeking to “destroy” a recent ceasefire agreement by calling for the deployment of UN-mandated peacekeepers to eastern Ukraine to enforce the deal.
Churkin said on Thursday that Kiev aimed to ruin the deal, which was reached last week in the Belarusian capital, Minsk, shortly after Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko made the request for the peacekeeper during an emergency meeting. The request by Poroshenko was approved by Ukraine’s national security and defense council late Wednesday. On Tuesday, the UN Security Council adopted a draft resolution, initiated by Russia, in support of the Minsk agreements on the Ukraine crisis settlement. The document was unanimously approved by all 15 members of the council. Russia's envoy to UN also stressed that Russia reaffirms support for a package of measures to resolve the crisis in Ukraine and expresses confidence that following the Minsk agreements Ukraine will turn over a dramatic chapter in its history. Vitaly Churkin said that in order for monitors from the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) to continue their work in Ukraine, including in the town of Debaltsevo, secure conditions must be created.
