(VOVWORLD) -19,000 people, including 3,000 children, were evacuated in the past day from dangerous areas in Ukraine and the Luhansk and Donetsk region to Russia, Colonel Mikhail Mizintsev, head of Russia’s Center for Defense Control said on Sunday.

Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk said 2,900 people, including 213 residents of the port city of Mariupol, were evacuated through humanitarian corridors on Sunday.
According to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), as of Sunday, more than 4.5 million Ukrainians, 90% of whom are women and children, left Ukraine since the armed conflict broke out in late February.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said that in addition to Ukrainian refugees, about 210,000 foreigners living, studying and working in Ukraine have fled this Eastern European country.
In another development, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Sunday that the EU will support Ukraine's parallel efforts to rebuild and seek EU membership once the conflict is over.
