Putin and Macron also discussed Russia’s request to be paid in rubles for Russian gas supplies to the European Union.
Humanitarian issues were of grave concern, according to the Kremlin. Putin briefed Macron on emergency humanitarian assistance and evacuation of civilians, including from the eastern Ukrainian port city of Mariupol, escorted by the Russian army. Putin said that in order to resolve the humanitarian crisis in Mariupol, Ukrainian combatants must stop their resistance and lay down their arms.
