(VOVworld) - Police shot an armed man as he tried to enter the US Capitol building's visitor centre in Washington on Tuesday. Officials said police shot a man who was drawing his weapon at a security checkpoint.

The White House and Congress were placed on lockdown, but the security precaution has since been lifted. The unnamed man was transported to a local hospital but his condition has not been revealed. A female bystander suffered minor injuries when police fired at the suspect.
Washington's city police called the shooting an "isolated" incident, and said there is "no active threat" to the public.
