South Korea, China disagree on ADIZ

(VOVworld) – South Korea has urged China to revise its new air defense identification zone (ADIZ) in the East China Sea, which has fueled regional tension since its announcement last Sunday.

The proposal was made at the 3rd annual defense talks between South Korea and China in Seoul.

Korean Vice Defense Minister Baek Seung-joo said South Korea will not recognize the Chinese zone, raising his concern over possible escalating military strain in the region. South Korea demanded that China redraw the zone, especially the area overlapping South Korea’s existing ADIZ, adding that South Korea is considering expanding its own air defense zone. But China rejected South Korea's proposal.

Earlier, Japan, South Korea, and the US voiced their opposition to China’s announcement, which requires all aircraft entering the zone to identify themselves or trigger a military emergency response.
