South Korea to double ODA for ASEAN countries by 2023

(VOVWORLD) - South Korea's overseas aid agency on Friday unveiled a plan to double official development assistance (ODA) for six Southeast Asian (ASEAN) states in the next five years.

The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) will increase the combined ODA for Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia and the Philippines to 180 billion won (151 million USD) by 2023 from 87 billion won (73 million USD) this year, focusing on support for education, rural and urban development, information and communications technologies, and transportation. KOICA’s plan conforms with Seoul's push to deepen ties with ASEAN countries under its "New Southern Policy." KOICA’s President promised the agency will contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in ASEAN.
