Since Vietnam and Brunei established diplomatic ties 27 years ago, the two countries have regularly exchanged visits and held high-ranking meetings. This visit to Vietnam by the Sultan is a milestone in their 27-year relationship that will strengthen cooperation, affirm mutual support at multilateral forums and international organizations, bolster solidarity and ASEAN's central role in regional security, and contribute to peace, security, stability, safety, and freedom of navigation and aviation in the region.

During late President Tran Dai Quang’s visit to Brunei in 2016, the two sides signed a joint statement, affirming their commitment to closer economic cooperation with the goal of achieving trade turnover of 500 million USD in 2025.
