Tokyo 2020 Olympics tightens security with facial recognition system

(VOVWORLD) - Japanese telecommunications and information technology giant NEC has announced that it will be providing a large-scale facial recognition system for the 2020 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo.

The system, the first of its kind to be implemented at an Olympics, using IC chips embedded within identification cards, to automatically verify the identity of officials and athletes entering over 40 venues. More than 300,000 athletes and Games staff will have to submit photographs to a database before the Olympics begin in July 2020. The system will not be aimed at spectators and will instead concentrate on strengthening security and decreasing waiting times for athletes.
