Turkey passes bill to send troops to Libya

(VOVWORLD) - Turkey’s parliament on Thursday approved a bill that allows troops to be deployed to Libya in support of the Tripoli-based government in Libya’s worsening civil war.

According to Parliament Speaker Mustafa Sentop, MPs voted 325-184 in favor of the bill, which allows Turkish forces to be sent to Libya in emergencies and to stay for 1 year.

Analysts and officials say Ankara is unlikely to immediately send troops, but for now just military advisers and equipment. A senior Turkish official said last week that Turkey may train Libyan soldiers in Turkey, and Reuters reported that Ankara is also considering sending allied Syrian fighters to Tripoli as part of the planned military support.
