(VOVWORLD) - Two people and a gunman were killed and many others injured in a shooting at a construction site in Auckland, New Zealand's largest city, police said on Thursday.

New Zealand's Prime Minster Chris Hipkins said the government has spoken to FIFA organizers and the tournament will proceed as planned.
The shooting in one of the busies downtown streets occurred just hours before the opening match of the 2023 Women's World Cup.
New Zealand and Norway are set to open the tournament at 7pm on Thursday local time at Auckland's Eden Park stadium.
