(VOVWORLD) - On Sunday, two years after the start of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Belgian Prime Minister Alexander de Croo, and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, visited Kiev to express their support for Ukraine.
During the visit, Italy and Canada signed security agreements with Ukraine, based on similar agreements previously signed with France, Germany and Denmark. These agreements involve providing billions of dollars annually to Ukraine to bolster its defense.
EC President von der Leyen said: "We are planning to open a defense innovation office in Kiev, and we are also collaborating with our G7 partners to fulfill our security commitments to Ukraine. However, the most significant security guarantee would be Ukraine’s admission into the EU."
Western countries have also stepped up economic sanctions against Russia. Last week, the US, the EU, and the UK unveiled hundreds of new sanctions targeting individuals, organizations, and companies helping Russia in its conflict with Ukraine. Vassily Nebenzia, Ambassador and Head of the Russian Delegation to the UN, said that if Western countries do not learn from the current conflict and stop attempting to impose their will on other nations, the world will be unable to sustain substantive dialogue and a just order.
