Typhoon Haiyan makes landfall in Hai Phong and Quang Ninh

(VOVworld) - Typhoon Haiyan in the early morning of Monday made landfall in Vietnam causing huge material losses to Hai Phong and Quang Ninh. No human casualty has been reported however. In Sunday evening, Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai worked with Hai Phong’s steering committee for flood and storm prevention and control and search and rescue. He said: “Heavy rains will come after the typhoon. I demand that forces stand by to cope with any contingency. Army and police forces must coordinate to support civilians.”

Nearly 4,200 vessels have found safe shelters and Hai Phong has evacuated more than 23,500 people to safe places and banned vehicles to circulate on national highway 10 and in the inner city.

Quang Ninh province has mobilized all army and police forces to prepare for any contingency. Power was cut at 9PM and vehicles were banned to cross Bai Chay bridge. Cao Huy Tuong, Head of the Office of the provincial People’s Committee: “5 inspection teams led by provincial leaders have been dispatched to steer activities to cope with the typhoon. People in places at risk of land slides and flash flood have been evacuated. All available forces have been mobilized and stand by to support.”

According to initial statistics, nearly 60 houses have been unroofed and dozens of electricity poles have collapsed, causing power outage in a large area.  

In related news, The Vietnamese government has decided to offer 100,000 USD in emergency relief to Philippine victims of typhoon Haiyan. State President Truong Tan Sang and Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung on Sunday cabled a message of condolence to Philippine President Benigno A. Aquino III over the huge human and property losses caused by typhoon Haiyan. They hoped the government and people of the Philippines would soon overcome the consequences of the natural disaster and stabilize their lives. In their message, they said they will consider additional aid to support the victims. The same day Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh also sent a message of sympathy to his Philippine counterpart Albert Del Rosario.
