The index ranks 173 cities in stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure.

With Copenhagen, Zurich, and Geneva ranked among the top five cities on the list, Western Europe "has retained its position as the most liveable region in the world." However, the report said the region had fallen in overall liveability compared to other regions owing to deteriorating stability.

Four Asia-Pacific cities—Melbourne and Sydney (Australia), Osaka (Japan) and Auckland (New Zealand) are among this year’s top ten most liveable cities.

Cities in the Middle East and North Africa presented a mixed bag. Israel’s conflict with Hamas has led to Tel Aviv experiencing the biggest fall in the ranks, dropping 20 places to 112th place.
