Ukraine’s President: conflict is waning
(VOVworld) - The peace deal reached between the Kiev administration and the opposition means that the “most dangerous" part of the 5-month-conflict in eastern Ukraine is over, says Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko.

At his first press conference since he assumed office in early June, Poroshenko said there is no doubt the peace plan will work. The President said he hopes parliament members supporting domestic reforms will prepare for next month’s elections to ensure Ukraine is ready for EU membership by 2020. Poroshenko also called for continued support from the International Monetary Fund and the West to help stabilize Ukraine’s currency, the hyrvnia. The currency has lost 40% of its value against the USD since the beginning of the year. Poroshenko said he will do all he can to protect the hryvnia against attacks and end "speculation" operations against it. The same day, Poroshenko ordered the cabinet to abandon Ukraine’s unaligned status, paving the way for Ukraine to join military alliances.
