UN chief Ban Ki-moon told participants at the “UN Peace Operations Review” on Monday that the number of civil wars has tripled in the past 10 years and humanitarian needs have reached 20 billion USD, adding that there has also been a qualitative change in the problems the world faces. Conflict is increasingly transnational and difficult to resolve through traditional tools, so, Ban said, member states have conducted “thoughtful and comprehensive” reviews towards a more effective UN response to peace and security challenges. He stressed that peace operations can succeed only when they are an expression of strong and unified international political will.
