Guterres was the only candidate nominated by UN members for the position of UN Secretary-General for the next term.
In his candidacy speech, Guterres emphasized that priorities for the coming term include continuing to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic and dealing with its consequences. He would work to promote peace and security, focusing on mobilizing support for political solutions to prolonged conflicts, at the same time building a new vision for peace, strengthen Peacekeeping Action, maintain peace, and protect civilians. He pledged to continue to promote environmental protection and strengthen measures to tackle climate change.
The UN General Assembly is expected to pass a resolution on June 18 appointing the new Secretary-General.
