UN chief: UN’s mission ‘more important than ever’

(VOVWORLD) - At its birth, the United Nations was a symbol of global unity. Today its mission is more important than ever  - conflict prevention and promotion of sustainable development – said UN Secretary-General António Guterres at a commemorative event Monday to celebrate UN Day on October 24.

Mr. Guterres said international cooperation is the only way to defeat the COVID-19 pandemic, the climate emergency, rising inequality, and the spreading of hatred.

He welcomed the UN General Assembly's statement of a commitment to multilateralism and global governance.

Mr. Guterres urged all countries to support the goals of the United Nations Charter.

In 1947, the UN General Assembly declared October 24 UN Day, the anniversary of the Charter of the United Nations, to be devoted to “making known to the people of the world the aims and achievements of the UN and to gaining their support for its work”.
