UN chief urges 'further, faster' national climate targets

(VOVWORLD) -United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday called on all countries that are party to the Paris climate agreement to set new climate plans for the year 2035 that achieve faster and deeper emission reduction cuts than they've already pledged.

His call came at a climate leaders summit on the sidelines of the 80th UN General Assembly (UNGA).
Guterres said: "Now, we need new plans for 2035 that go much further, and much faster: delivering dramatic emissions cuts aligned with 1.5 degrees; covering all emissions and sectors; and accelerating a just energy transition globally. Your new plans can take us a significant step forward."
According to Guterres, the 30th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP30), to be held in Brazil this November, “must conclude with a credible global response plan to get us on track.”
COP30 must also show a credible path to mobilizing the 1.3 trillion USD annually in climate finance by 2035, as agreed at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, he added.
