Speaking at the opening of the World Forum for Democracy in Strasbourg, France, on Monday, Ban showed deep concern over the continuing provision of weapons to the Syrian government and opposition forces. Ban said Syria's 19-month crisis is damaging Middle East stability.  He reiterated calls for a political solution, which he said is the “only way” to resolve the crisis. Ban’s warning comes after 5 consecutive days of retaliatory shellings across Syria-Turkey border. The Syria-Lebanon border has also experienced gunfire, illegal intrusion and refugee kidnappings.
Violence continued across Syria yesterday, causing at least 61 deaths, 20 of them killed in an attack by Syrian troops on the town of Karak Al-Sharqui into southern province of Daraa.
