UN General Assembly president calls for Security Council reform

(VOVWORLD) - The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) needs reforming in order to effectively respond to the world's biggest challenges, UN General Assembly president Volkan Bozkir said at a debate on Monday.

Mr. Bozkir said the council, on many occasions, has failed to carry out its responsibility to maintain international peace and security. Competing interests among its members and frequent use of veto have limited the Council's effectiveness, he said, adding that even in some of the most urgent humanitarian crises, the Council could not provide a timely and adequate response.

Mr. Bozkir said reform is an unavoidable imperative — both challenging and essential.

The Security Council, which can decide on international sanctions and the use of force, has 15 members. In addition to the five permanent nations, it has 10 non-permanent members elected for two-year terms.

In June, 2019, Vietnam secured 192 out of 193 votes, a record high number of votes, to become a non-permanent member of the UNSC for 2020-2021.
