Pratibha Mehta, UN Resident Coordinator in Vietnam and representative of the Ambassador Group, made the statement at a meeting in Hanoi Thursday with Vietnamese National Assembly Vice Chairwoman Tong Thi Phong. Mehta hailed Vietnam’s effort in ensuring gender equality as set by Millennium Development Goals, calling on Vietnamese leaders to support the building of an effective mechanism in promoting gender equality. The two leaders agreed to hold a seminar on gender equality in the future and increase the number of women in the National Assembly.
Mrs. Phong said the up-coming Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly in Hanoi next year will cover issues relating to women, children, poverty reduction, and HIV/AIDS prevention and control, hoping that the UN and the group of ambassadors will continue support for Vietnam to achieve Millennium Development Goals.
