(VOVworld) – The United Nations Special Envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, has initiated new approaches for a peaceful settlement of the Syrian crisis. His proposals were put forward at a meeting of the UN Security Council on Wednesday.
Mr. Mistura said that, following two months of meetings with over 200 important figures in Syria and other countries, the proposals emphasized the need to stop the advance of Islamic State and the Al Nusra group, as well as fix division and sectarianism.
He proposed that that Syrian people should participate in working teams to organize discussions on thorny issues in the Geneva Communique 2012. The teams will engage in major issues including politics and the constitution, the fight against terrorism, national development, healthcare services, and ensuring security for the people.
