The resolution, sponsored by the United States and Russia, elevates the Islamic State to the same level as al-Qaeda and the Taliban in the list of the most serious terrorist threats to the world. The resolution is designed to disrupt revenue that the Islamic State gets from oil and antiquities sales, ransom payments, and other criminal activities. It calls on countries to share intelligence information about the terrorist organization and develop common standards to effectively trace activities sponsoring terrorism. Measures such as asset freezes, travel bans, and arms embargoes will be taken against the Islamic State.
