UN Security Council extends mandates in Iraq, Cyprus
(VOVworld)- The UN Security Council on Wednesday unanimously approved a resolution to extend the UN Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) until 31 July 2015.
The UN Security Council in its resolution expressed its deep concerns over some terrorist groups’ activities, especially the armed group known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), and strongly protested the group’s inhumane acts against Iraqi civilians, creating tension in Iraq as well as threatening security in the region. The council said that security of UN Staff is the top priority for UNAMI and called on UN members to continue their support to this UN mission.
The UN Security council also extended the mandate of the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus, known as UNFICYP, for 6 more months, by 31 January 2015.
