On his Twitter account, Zhang Jun said China expresses a "high degree of concern" over deadly clashes in the occupied Palestinian territories, adding that the Security Council should take action and send a strong message.

The Norwegian mission to the UN said that Sunday’s meeting was proposed by Norway, Tunisia, and China, which chairs the Security Council in May. It was originally planned to take place on Friday, May 14.

On Friday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Qatar's Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani urged an end to the Israeli violence against the Palestinians.
