The meeting was requested by the US, Japan, and South Korea, to address the rising tension on the Korean peninsula caused by the North’s repetitive missile tests and persistent fears that it might soon conduct a sixth nuclear test.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Sunday urged tough measures against North Korea.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe called the test a challenge to the world, saying that Japan will work with the US, South Korea, China, and Russia to address the threat, and will raise the issue for discussion at the G7 Summit in Italy this month.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson called the test "disappointing" and "disturbing" and warned that the US is still in the early stages of applying economic and diplomatic pressures to Pyongyang.
