UN urges restraint as violence escalates in Sri Lanka

(VOVWORLD) -UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet on Tuesday called on authorities in Sri Lanka to prevent further violence, and urged restraint and meaningful dialogue to address the grievances of the population amid the country's severe economic crisis.

In her statement, Bachelet expressed concern at the escalating violence as supporters of Sri Lanka's recently resigned Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa clashed with the people demanding Rajapaksa's resignation.

According to Bachelet, the economic crisis has made life difficult for the people of Sri Lanka.
