The magnitude-6.0 quake struck remote, mountainous border provinces near Pakistan around midnight Sunday, killing over 1,400 people, injuring over 3,200, and destroying some 8,000 homes.

According to the US Geological Survey, the epicenter was just 27 km from Jalalabad, at a depth of 8 km, conditions that often amplify damage in Afghanistan, where most residents live in collapse-prone mud-brick houses.
