Unilateral actions to complicate situation off the Tonkin Gulf should be avoided

(VOVworld) – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs held its regular press briefing on Thursday. In response to a question concerning China’s deployment of oilrig HD 943 to an overlapping area, which has not been delineated between Vietnam and China, Deputy spokesperson for Vietnam’s Foreign Ministry Pham Thu Hang said: “According to China’s announcement, the area where oilrig HD 943 is operating off the Tonkin Gulf, is where Vietnam and China have been discussing delineation. Therefore, parties involved should avoid unilateral actions that might complicate the situation, not beneficial to demarcation talks. Vietnam reserves its legitimate rights and interests in this area in line with international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.”

Commenting on the appointment of Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi, President of the National League for Democracy Party, to a number of ministerial posts including the Myanmar ministry of foreign affairs, Hang said: “Vietnam congratulates Myanmar’s new government. As a member of the ASEAN Community, Vietnam always wants to develop its traditional relationship and multifaceted cooperation with Myanmar in the interests of both peoples. Vietnam wants to work closely with Myanmar and other ASEAN members in strengthening ASEAN unity and cooperation for regional peace and stability.”

Regarding the recent arrests of Vietnamese nationals in China, Malaysia, the US, and Australia, Hang said Vietnamese diplomatic agencies have taken the necessary measures to ensure that they are treated fairly and have full legal rights.
