UNSC issues no statement condemning attack against US Embassy in Iraq

(VOVWORLD) - Differences between the US, Russia and China have blocked the UN Security Council from issuing a statement condemning the December 31 attack on the US Embassy in Baghdad.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Chinese Ambassador to the UN Zhang Jun said any UNSC statement should also include the latest developments and help prevent tensions from escalating. He said China strongly supports the protection of diplomatic corps under international law. The US’s unilateral action has led to major changes to the regional situation, he said.

Russian Ambassador to the UN Vassily Nebenzia said the UNSC should include the US drone strike at Baghdad international airport in its statement.
