US charges Russian firms, citizens with election meddling
(VOVWORLD) - A US federal jury has charged 13 Russian nationals and three Russian companies as part of an investigation into alleged interference in the US’s 2016 presidential elections.
The Friday charges by the office of Special Counsel Robert Mueller described a conspiracy to sway public opinion and promote the campaign of Republican Donald Trump, against his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.
According to the 37-page indictment, the accused involved posed as Americans online, posted ads against Clinton and organized pro-Trump political rallies within the US.
Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs dismissed the allegations as "absurd”.
