Chinese Vice Premier Liu He led the Chinese delegation at the start of two days of talks taking place on Wednesday with a view toward the March deadline before Washington more than doubles tariffs on $200 billion USD in Chinese imports.
In a related development, US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said the world’s two biggest economies are vying for more influence in important high-tech sectors.
US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, who remains the most prominent advocate of the deal for the Trump administration, on Tuesday told the Fox Business Network that both sides have discussed thorny issues including market access, no forced transfer of technology through joint ventures, and enforcement measures. He expected "significant progress" in this week's talks.
