(VOVworld)- Stonegate Bank, a small Florida bank opened an account for the Cuban government in the US on Wednesday, removing one obstacle in the way of Washington and Havana restoring diplomatic ties after more than half a century.
According to a US State Department offical, Stonegate Bank in Pompano Beach, Florida, has become the first US bank to open an account for the Cuban government.
Following a move to ease restrictions on travel and trading earlier this year, the Obama administration said it would remove financial and technical barriers to Havana reopening its embassy in Washington. Early this month, the US resumed ferry service between Florida and Cuba, and an air route between New York city and Havana has been scheduled.
